Burnout and Frustration at the heart of John Masello’s exhibition at Pottery Northwest

Entitled “Don’t Listen,” the exhibit highlights the daily grind of teaching artist, John Masello. His visual narrative explores the perspective of burnout that comes from a life of constant repetition that eventually turn into habits, leading to utter exasperation.

“I am thrilled to see John’s work up in The Gallery at Pottery Northwest,” said Ed King, Executive Director of Pottery Northwest. “This exhibition not only explores new aesthetic paradigms in its visual dialect, but offers a rare glimpse into the challenges of teaching artists - explored so masterfully through this multi-media installation. It’s truly inspiring.”

A masterfully executed artistic vision comes to life at Pottery Northwest

Masello’s exhibition is colorful and dynamic. The artist’s use of ceramics is artfully executed through figures and compositions that are visual interpretations of grievance, burnout, and exasperation. The three dimensinal installation of works hang from the ceiling, sprawl on the floor, and are on full display on the gallery walls. Additionally, interpretive paintings round out the exhibition in an energetic display of eye-popping color.

“This show is inspired by the moments it feels like I am throwing my life away,” Masello stated. “As an exhausted teacher, I am always repeating myself but those words aren’t being picked up. Don’t listen, don’t remember, don’t learn, don’t even try.”
